A sad day for soul…

Yes children, Chef is dead.

Soul, South Park and Scientology… Access via BBC

I found out the tragic news this morning online but all reports seemed a tad vague around the cause of death. One report says he was found unconscious near a treadmill that was still running… usch… what a way to go. But the BBC said it was most likely he died from a medical condition, as Hayes suffered from high blood pressure and allegedly had a minor stroke back in January.

For those of you who are not huge fans of South Park like myself, Isaac Hayes used his sexy baritone as the voice of my favourite adult role model, Chef. He was however, originally a soul singer who won an Academy Award for the theme tune of Shaft and in recent years, he has been a high-profile Scientologist.

In fact, Isaac Hayes angrily (and tragically) left South Park in 2006 due to the show’s open mockery of his ‘religion’. However, in an interview with the Associated Press, South Park’s co-creator Matt Stone said that Hayes “has no problem – and he’s cashed plenty of checks – with our show making fun of Christians.”

But despite being a bit of a hypocrite and having a few wack beliefs, Isaac Hayes was a great performer with a heavenly voice and he will no doubt be missed.
