Sold.. to the lady in red (wine).

I bet you’ve never imagined that a dress could made from red wine… And quite frankly, why would you? If you’re anything like me, you’re quite happy necking the stuff of a weekend and don’t feel the need to dress in it…

Well anyway, they exist and this morning I touched one.

Yes, I plodded on down to the Ultimo Science Festival to cover the story for Reportage and it’s given me some serious inspiration for a feature article. Just as other industries have had to adapt to the ‘inconvenient truth’ of climate change, so too should the fashion industry.

Enter red wine. While the technology that makes the dresses is far from viable – they smell like a bad night on the turps and crack when they dry out – if the fashion industry wants to claim it has a conscience, it will need to start thinking about its sexy, but exploitative, carbon footprint.

Some designers are already changing their practices and sourcing materials ethically and ecologically but is eco-fashion just a fad? Can fashion with its ephemeral nature ever be sustainable?

So that was my day really, I touched some stinky dresses and thought a bit about the fashion industry, proud that I’ve been subconsciously boycotting for years by not owning a single stylish garment. Go me, I love self-righteousness.
